Roughouts are actually woodcarving blanks that enable woodcarvers to get to the "fun" part of carving a figure or other project made of wood. Basically, a roughout carving blank is "roughed-out" to replicate a finished carving, to a greater degree than a blank that is bandsawed out using patterns depicting the front and side views of a figure. |

Roughouts are being used heavily in the teaching of woodcarving by instructors. They allow more of the detail of a project to be taught in a shorter period of time. Practically all instructors at the Woodcarving Rendezvous have utilized roughout blanks in their teaching process.
